Pilot is a creature class that was introduced in Kaladesh.[1]

Description

Pilots are proficient at crewing Vehicles. Creatures with the type generally have an ability that care about Vehicles, but the breadth of design means the abilities can't be summarized easily. There is also an associated typal land, Mech Hangar.

Recurrent Pilot abilities have been:

Pilots are primarily red and white.

History

Several cards from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and its accompanying commander set create pilot tokens that crew vehicles as if their power were two greater. Later on, Aetherdrift introduced pilot tokens which are identical to their Kamigawan predecessors except that their ability now additionally functioned when saddling Mounts. However, the older pilots aren't to be errata'd.[2][3] This same additional text occurred on several Pilot creatures, and some abilities of Pilots also referred to Mounts.

Notable Pilots

Errata

With the introduction of the type, the decision was made to not retroactively apply it to Goblin Test Pilot from Dragon's Maze because it can't crew vehicles.[4] However, this change was reversed, and the creature type was added with the rules update for Aether Revolt.[5]
